There are some people who do not believe in God’s healing power, they sometime ask me “why could God not heal Timothy?”. They sometime use a verse from “1 Timothy 5:23”, to justify their argument. Let us understand the truth from this verse.
1Timothy 5: 23 No longer drink only water, but use a little wine for your stomach’s sake and your frequent infirmities.
Timothy was a disciple of Jesus and he was very close to Paul the apostle. Paul wrote 1 timothy and 2 timothy to guide timothy about various spiritual and practical things.
The word infirmity used in different places and it has different meaning. It does not always mean sickness. We need to understand the context to understand the meaning of it. In the present context it can be a sickness. From this verse it seems timothy had some stomach problem. Probably Paul prayed for timothy’s problem. But it was not clear from this verse whether he was healed or he remained sick rest of his life.
We can see here Paul is advising him to change his diet as what he was drinking was not been good to him. Or may be Paul is advising him to drink little wine with water as medication. He was telling him to take care of him health.
Some people believe that Paul could not heal him by prayer and so he is advising him for some medication.
But this is not true. This verse does not give any evidence that he remained sick.
Last year I met a man who was had stomach sickness. He had pain in his stomach and asked me to pray for him. As we prayed for him and after that he could not experience the pain. Then, his wife told me that he had very irregular eating habits. So I advise him to have food on time. If someone record my advice and say that – see because God could not heal the person that’s why he is advising for eating on time.
There are passages in the bible where we find some believers are sick-
None of the passages mention
- God could not heal the sick person
- The sickness was for God’s glory
- These sickness was like a trial from God
- The sickness has a purpose from God
Some People think because they can find a believer sick in the bible that means they can disprove God’s healing work. They believe God is involved in keeping people sick, but this idea is against the understanding of gospel massage and against Jesus Christ, as he is the healer. They do not want to believe God heals the sick. We need to understand that people can become sick but God heals sickness.
