Lord Jesus told his disciples to go out share the gospel and to heal the sick. So, disciples need to learn how to heal the sick. You may come across a sick person. If the person allows you then you need to pray for healing. Let us discuss some steps for healing the sick.
- First, you should cancel any fear or doubt that may come in your mind against the prayer for healing. (Rom. 8:6-7). Your fleshly understanding can become bondage against healing.
- You can ask person, more about the sickness, its symptoms etc. Some sickness has pain in particular area or some other difficulties. This is for general understanding to know which are the areas affected by the sickness. So that you can pray for those areas.
- You may Lay your hand on the sick area or on the person and pray. It is good to lay hand and pray, but it is not always necessary. Without laying hand also God can heal. You should always ask for permission before you do lay your hands (In some cultures it is offensive. Some people are not comfortable with it).
- Pray simple, clear and short prayers of healing.
- God has given you authority and power(Luke 9:1, Mat 10:1) to heal the sick. You have to use that in prayer. You can command the sickness to leave the body, or you can command that particular part of the body to get healed in Jesus name.
Examples: “Pain, sickness, cancer, etc. I command you to get out f the body right now in Jesus name.” Or “Knee, be healed in Jesus name. Stomach, be restored in Jesus name.”
Do not request God to heal. Remember God has already given you power and authority to heal. Some people beg God to heal as if God doesn’t want to heal. You are not called to request God to heal.
- Some sickness is due to demonic, so during your prayer demons may manifest. You have to carry out deliverance for the sick person.
- During prayer God may give you a word of knowledge, you have to act accordingly.
Example: When I was praying for a person, I received a word of knowledge that – the person is holding back unforgiveness towards someone. When the person repented for it and released it he got completely healed.
- After prayer, ask them how they feel about their sickness. You can check the sickness level (scale of 1 to 10) and pray accordingly.
- Some time you may have to pray repeatedly. There is nothing wrong if you pray for someone more than once. Jesus once prayed for a sick person (Mark 8:22-25) twice.
Once I prayed for a paralytic for one and half hour for her healing. She got completely healed. In another case we prayed for a paralytic for 5 minutes and he got completely healed.
- You can pray till the person is completely healed or you can leave the person after some improvement. You have to lead by the Holy Spirit and godly wisdom. Sometime healing process may start, when you pray and it may take some time for complete healing.
Example: once I prayed for a paralytic person who got partial healing at that moment. After some days she called me and told me that she got completely healed.
- Praise God if the healing is complete or partial. And then you can share gospel or help him to come out from any other issues of life.
Do not keep any doubt or fear in your mind about healing. God has given you new life and commissioned you to go out and share the gospel and to heal the sick.
